Term 3 - What to expect




Dear Parents and Caregivers,

We hope you all had a lovely mid-year break with your families.  Welcome back for another term.  Please see below for an outline of Term 3 for the Year 7 students.

Religion
World Religions – Students will explore the similarities and differences of religions around the world. We will be focusing on Islam, Christianity and Judaism.




English
This term we will be focusing on Procedural texts and Poetry. The Procedural text will be aligned with our History unit. Students will receive teacher directed lessons to ensure their understanding of each genre. They will then be required to complete the written task individually during class time provided. The procedural text will be completed in the second half of the term. The students Poetry anthology will be completed throughout the term with different styles of poetry being written weekly.
All Year 7 students will also experience intensive grammar, spelling, punctuation and lessons focusing on comprehension. This is to prepare the students for the pressures of high school essay writing and research skill requirements.

Science, Geography and Technology
This will be delivered as an integrated unit exploring phenomena on Earth and the Water Cycle. Students will investigate how different phenomena affect the in particular the water cycle on Earth. In Science, students will complete a series of experiments to gain a ‘hands on’ understanding. Through Geography the students will learn about the Water Cycle, its importance to society and how human hands can cause irreversible damage. Students will take this new understanding and design and create a Diorama and description displaying their understanding of how the Water Cycle flows through the environment.


Mathematics
All of the strands in mathematics will be explored this term. This includes;
·       Translations, reflections, rotations, enlargements and dilations,
·       Data representation and interpretation – ways of collecting, representing, comparing and analysing data using mean, median and range to compare the data,
·       Chance including probability, relative frequency and sample spaces,
·       Classifying triangles according to their side and angles.
This term students will sit two math exams that will cover 2 areas on each exam.

History, Technology and The Arts
The students will be delving into Ancient Rome. They will explore the following areas:
·         the various features of the Roman empire,
·         physical features of ancient Rome,
·         key groups and the Law in ancient times,
·         Roman inventions (which the students will need to pick two and report their findings)
·         Roles in Roman times (which the students will need to complete a Venn Diagram demonstrating their understanding)
·         Make a Roman God Mobile (which the students will complete as part of their English Procedural unit)
·         Students will be required to dress as a member of the ancient Roman world for showcase evening.
Cultural Literacy, P.E and Music
Weekly lessons will continue this term for students to be engaged in Cultural Literacy, Physical Education and Music delivered by specialist teachers in those areas.


Homework and Study Group
Homework will consist of weekly spelling words, weekly editing and punctuation worksheets and completion of any class work relevant to that day/week.
We will be offering study sessions this term for those students who would like to develop their learning. Session times to be advised.
